Model Mold Making and Casting in Ceramics

On completion of course the student will be enabled to prepare Models, Molds and castings in the ceramics (Pottery Development) using necessary tools and equipment of the trade. He should have learnt about different materials used in model / mold making and casting, difference between Mold for Jiggering / Jollying, de-airing in plaster of Paris mixing etc.

After the completion of this course the student/trainee will learn the following skills:

  • Selection, use, precaution of tools and masonry instruments for the preparation/making of model and mold with Plaster of Paris.
  • Making the slurry of Plaster of Paris of required viscosity.
  • Do the “Soaping” and “Shellacking”.
  • De-air the mixture/slurry of Plaster or Paris through (De-air) mixing machine.
  • Making the model of round shaped on potter/modeling wheel according to given design & size.
  • Making the model of irregular / geometrical shape.
  • Calculate the body shrinkage and develop the model keeping in view this shrinkage.
  • Make the one piece, two-piece or more piece master mold.
  • Make the one piece, two-piece or more piece case/father mold.
  • Make the one piece, two-piece or more piece working mold.
  • Perform the routine maintenance of daily used tools and equipment.
  • Apply the paste for the surfaces to join.
  • Perform the joining of the desired ware.
  • Make handles for joining by pressing, by coiling and by slip casting techniques.
  • Identify the defective wares and able to remove the defects in the green ware.
  • Measure, Cut and join the ware according to the demand of the product.
  • Work according to sketches or instructions.
  • Prepare the surface of ware for Joining according to the shape of ware.
  • Identify and maintain the moisture content during working with the ware.
  • Handle various tools with safety.
  • Sharp and set the various types of tools of Finishing.
  • Inspect and rectify the faults in finished wares.
  • Equip trainees with correct and efficient use of related tools.
  • Sharpening and setting of various tools of joining.
